A highly sophisticated jug

Alison – Well…. Jugs have always fascinated me because they are so absolutely useful and incredibly diverse. And I’ve got a collection in this kitchen ranging from the most banal to the most sophisticated, and I’d say what is sitting there in front of us is on the high sophistication bracket…..

First of all it’s a very difficult glaze and secondly the very fine artist potter called Hannah McAndrew who made it, has used it as a vehicle for kind of turning it into a kitchen shelf of other pots. Pots in pots, and she has done it with quite a lot of care, and I don’t think it is very easy to do. So I purchased it from her one Spring Fling, about ten years ago. Pure ornament I’m afraid.

Every jug has its own profile, and I think it has a good profile for what it is saying it is. It’s saying ‘I’m a majestic pot’
